Cheng's Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into Cheng’s Restaurant is like slipping into a quietly vibrant corner of Cantonese tradition nestled in Rochester Hills. The space carries a warm buzz—a comforting hum of friendly chatter and clinking dishes that suggests both steady local loyalty and enthusiastic first-timers discovering something special. It’s an intimate setting where the pace is lively but never rushed, inviting you to settle in and savor the moments as much as the food.
The atmosphere here is practical and unpretentious, focused on the shared joy of authentic flavors rather than showy presentations or polished decor. You’ll notice the familiar rhythms of a bustling kitchen paired with servers navigating the packed room, a subtle dance that speaks to the popularity Cheng’s has earned through genuine care rather than flash.
Here, the experience unfolds around thoughtfully crafted dishes that invite exploration. Whether it’s the delicate snap of a perfectly steamed shrimp dumpling or the unexpected comfort of pan-fried sticky rice, the menu feels like an homage to home-cooked Cantonese classics made with attention and heart. The dim sum, in particular, carries a reputation not just for flavor but for evoking those communal connections that make dining out feel like coming together.
Cheng’s cultivates a feeling of rootedness—where recipes passed down through generations meet the diverse tastes of this Metro Detroit neighborhood. The local crowd, from families to longtime Cantonese cuisine lovers, appreciates this blend of familiarity and substance. It’s a place where arrival feels like stepping into a story, one told through shared plates and the quiet satisfaction of a meal well enjoyed.

I’ve travelled the world from Hong Kong to Bangkok and many places in between sampling various Chinese foods…heck I even had it dab snack in the middle of Baghdad, a couple miles away from one of Sadam Hussein’s palaces during an international conflict. Cheng’s is in my top 5 Chinese restaurants from the Metro Detroit area. Don’t expect Panda Express. IMHO it’s much closer to mainland China style, but its more transitional and easier for the western taste buds. A good indicator of authenticity is the percentage of patrons of Chinese heritage…note its higher here. You’ll find an array of dishes from Dim Sum style to more traditional Mao Po Tofu. I find the menu to offer a wide range. I’m sure you can find something tasty. Service is on par with many traditional restaurants. To me it runs leaner than most and has longer wait times. For over 10 years they’ve continued to delivery great eats. I think it’s certainly worth a try.

Very good dim sum! Took the family here out of recommendation from a co-worker. Great hostess, super friendly. Small interior but packed with people. Busy environment so servers are walking around trying to drop off the right dish. They have a great selection if you don’t eat meat. Everything we got except one dish was vegetarian.

Best dim sum in Metro Detroit, as some people say. Food is tasteful, portions are generous and the service is nice and welcoming, which is not always the case in Chinese restaurants. We used to only go to Shangri La but they reduced the size of the portions, increased the price and their service is horrible. Cheung is definitely the best in town, and we have done many !!!

Today we had dimsum at Cheng’s and I had the best spring roll I’ve ever had in my entire life. Delicious creamed corn and chicken soup. Fabulous fried shrimp and shrimp in bean curd skin. I cannot speak highly enough about the food here. Everything was so flavorful. I’m already plotting my return visit. Absolutely get the fried squid. The topping of onions and peppers took me places. I am so pleased with my experience. I didn’t expect it to be so good I had to write about it so my pictures suck, but they came adequate display the level of YUM.

This is the best dim sum place in metro Detroit. We drive 45 minutes from Novi to eat here, even though Shangri-La is only 15 minutes away. Unfortunately, Shangri-La has gone downhill over the years — the food quality and value have dropped so much that it’s no longer an option. Cheng’s, on the other hand, is far superior in both taste and value. It’s also accompanied by the classic Guangdong service style — where servers drop your food on the table without a word, don’t bother announcing what the dish is, and seem to have permanently banned “thank you” and “you’re welcome” from their vocabulary. Authentic to the core, for better or worse. I just wish there were more places like this closer by. For now, it’s absolutely worth the drive and the time.

We enjoyed the dim sums here. The restaurant is quite small, nothing fancy about it but the food is good. We were surprised how empty it was when we arrived for dim sums during the weekdays. The dim sums were hot and fresh, better than some of the other local restaurants. Prices are not cheap. Service is decent not self initiative, you asked you received type of service, but friendly though.
